Biography

Paul Bernstein was born next to dry, rural cornfields in Springfield, Ohio. His extensive body of performance work includes pieces that dwell the in the “particular something” of the mid-west, others that fill out lonely corners of the big city and some that do not exist in a where or even a what but are more about how and when. Paul is a theater artist and master teacher concerned with new approaches to composition for movement, text and new performance. He is known for his highly technical and imaginative methods of building repeatable, yet open-ended compositions that are never twice the same. His original works have been produced extensively in the cities where Paul has lived, in New York, San Francisco, Brussels, Amsterdam and London. His sharp-edged performance work emphasizes a broad range of transformational possibilities, new forms of acting, playwriting and vocal choreography for a highly physical theater.

Paul covers the field of international performance research while working and traveling throughout Western Europe. His work as a maker and performer is a continual combining of various disciplines which he deftly melds into one.
