This site is an introduction to the performance works of theater artist PAL BERNSTEIN and “UPON THE OTHER.” Pal is a playwright and a physical theater artist creating work that operates by both dramatic and choreographic means. His highly unusual plays and performance works have been produced extensively on both coasts of the United States and in eight European countries. The work is concerned with a realm that exists between the social and the private, behavior and amplified movement, time and timelessness.
In 2010/2011 Pal appeared as Aunt Leaf in the play, Aunt Leaf at HERE Arts Center and the Hudson Opera House, and as Hershel in Hershel, an original solo for Gas & Electric Arts at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia. He also played Estragon in the Japanese/American workshop production of Godot Has Arrived at New York Theater Workshop. Recent performances in Europe have included productions at the Ludwig Museum of Modern Art and L1 Dance Theatre in Budapest, Studio 7 Theatre in Amsterdam, L’Mono Theatre and The Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art, in Bilbao.
Please stay tuned. A series of performances are currently being created for new acting and electronic media.
Of course this highly physical, broadly vocalized work must be experienced live to be fully appreciated, but photos, video and audio excerpts throughout the site provide a taste of the real thing.
